The evil of the internet

Posted on April 29th, 2007 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

I was doing some research for this company I am interviewing for ReputationDefender, and I found this website that they are in battle with AutoAdmit. I am not sure what the point of AutoAdmit is, but it just seems like a horrible place. They claim to be a source for discussion about Ivy League schools, but the first couple of threads I read on there were about rape, racism, homophobia, and they even had posts from someone with the moniker of the VT shooter.

Apparently this site is very popular and is frequented by so called “ivy leaguer”, mostly law school students. But some of their discussions and comments make them sound like disgruntled high school students.

Its actually kind of scary to think that those people are really going to be lawyers. I hope that this site is a bunch of nothing more than hot air.

The other interesting angle of this story is how your “virtual reputation” can destroy your chances of getting a job. I think this in itself a load of crap. If an employer is stupid enough to not hire you because they found some information about you on Google, it’s probably not worth it to work for that company.

I have discussed this before, but I will say it again. If an employer find something incriminating about you on the net, they should at least ask you about it before rushing to judgment. Everyone knows that information found on the internet are not worth the pixels they appear on…

Reasons why I hate MySpace

Posted on April 28th, 2007 in Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

Everyone hates myspace, at least smart people do. Yea, that means you are a dumbarse! Anyways, here are my list of reasons why I hate myspace.

1) Semantically bad web design - looks like crap, function like crap, color scheme is horrid.

2) Very little improvement ever happens - they never add any good features even though they are extremely popular. It’s almost like they are anti-innovation.

3) Spam - I am pretty popular on my space. Girls IM me and wants to be my friend. They call me stud muffin and post naughty pixs for me to look at. WTF? I know I am hot, but 10 girls in a one week is a bit unbelievable.

4) Commenting system is crap - People are allowed to post hedious pictures and music on other people’s profile. How annoying.

5) Hedious Ads Everywhere - You have to see like 100 ads just to do anything on myspace.

6) The TRUE dot COM Ads - I hate how they have video clips of girls laying in front of their laptops, half-dressed, licking lollipops. I do not need to be sexually stimulated every time I visit myspace!!!! I like to control my sexual urges to afternoon hours and during drunken furors.

The bigger they are, the harder they’ll fall. I have an idea that will make MySpace looks like shoe scum. Holla! :o

Not sure what to title this

The other day I was given an opportunity to tour the www.playpure.com work place. It was just a bunch of Asian guys sitting around in a dark room, in front of their giant computer screens. The perfect work place. It made me wonder why my friends and I did not do something like that. I was really impressed that a bunch of UCD grads like myself were able to do something like that.

Today I went to spotlight dance studio with Uyen. Dancing tango, romba, and some other weird stuff. If you are single and you want to meet a lady, you got to go ball room dancing. That’s where all the ladies be at. Yes you will look like an ass ballroom dancing, and you will probably step on a lot of toes, but just pretend like you are Casablanca and everything will be ok. You can also pretend to be a newbie and stuff and have the girls teach you. I think girls likes it when you act all vulnerable and embarrassed so it will work real good. I been FORCED to ballroom dance several times now. Every time I go I am a noob again. I like it that way because I am never expected to dance well.

Come to think of it, the first time Uyen really really really caught my eye was when I saw her at ballroom dancing. That day me and Ho came home from fishing and we smelled like shit and we were hella dirty and dressed like bums. But we went there anyways. When I walked in , I saw a really really really hot girl with a mini-skirt and a pink polo on. I thought she was hella hot and I wanted to dance with her. She was talking to a guy who looked buff and tall and handsome, so I was like, F-that I ain’t trippin. He may be buff, but I am an idiot that smelled like fish, so I am not scared!!! Turns out, that girl was Uyen. Luckily for me, that dude did not make a move fast enough. So before I knew it, I was dancing with her. How did I do it?? Like I said, I just came off as a bumbling fool and asked her to teach me. I remember we danced almost every song that night. I remember looking at her and thinking she was really really really hot. I told her I thought she was the prettiest girl in the room, and then she laughed and told me I was the best looking guy here. I found out later, she was lying to me that night. But whatever. I was serious when I told her that she was the prettiest girl in the room. She did not think much of it. In fact, at the end of that night, she ended up flirting with that one guy she was standing with in the beginning, and at the end they started dating.

When I asked her why, she told me it was because I dissed her that night. So what happened was, she asked to sit next to me at the restaurant we went to after dancing. I jokingly told her “no, I am saving this for another girl”. She said she was hurt so she refused to sit next to me. Then she started flirting with the other guy again. Personally, I think she’s dumb for thinking that I would diss her, but that’s just my opinion.
Anyways, in the end I was pretty heartbroken that night. I thought we really connected while dancing, because she seemed really into me during the dance. I came home and bitched about it to my friend Suzie for like a whole night. In the end things worked out ok, so its all good..

Moral of the story is, always act like a bumbling idiot, girls dig it. :) hahaha.. Oh yea, also, don’t tell girls you don’t want to sit next to them, apparently that really makes them mad. hahahahahah.

The way life should be

It’s 10 am and I am still sitting in my PJ. I am officially unemployed. Monday I came in with a resignation letter. Tuesday afternoon I got my check and told I was done. Great! :D

I don’t ever want to go back to work. Life should always be like this, and I intend to keep it that way. I will never go back to “work”. Of course, I will find another job, but it will be a job that I like, so I never have to wake up in the morning and say to myself “time for work”. I would like to wake up and smile in the dark, knowing that today I am going to do something great.

Uyen told me that at my next job interview I should ask the interviewers “What is your favorite part about working here?” I think that’s a great question. If the interviewers themselves cannot give me a good answer about their job, in a reasonable amount of time, it shows that the job is not worth doing.

So anyways, time for me to gear and put on my thinking cap, time to find that dream “job”. Oh btw, I am not dressing up for my next interview. I am not going to work in a shirt and slacks anymore. Unless of course, I am hired to do something in front of customers where I “have” to look professional, then thats ok.

I dont digg it

Reading Digg can be aggravating at times because it almost seems like everyone on digg is a God-hating atheist. I am not sure how much the opinions seen on digg reflects the actual census of people around the world, but if it really does, then its a pretty sorry world we live in.

But you know, it doesn’t matter. People are entitled to their opinions, just as I am entitled to mine. I just wish that “other people” would not judge me just because of my faith. I have never tried to “convert” anyone (unless they asked me about God), I never told anyone they would go to hell, and I have no interest in molesting anyone. So, before anyone tell me I am “brainwashed” or call me a “sheep” for being part of an “organized religion”, consider that I have done nothing against you. So leave me a lone.

This year is the first year I officially paid the government money.
I owed them about 4 grand, but I only had about 3 grand withheld so I had to pay up a grand.
That is a lot of money taken away in one swoop.
It’s almost like like one really really really really bad night at the casinos.
Kind of lame to think that some part of that money is going to pay for someone to shoot someone else.

I don’t feel any richer, do you? Can an economist tell how this is possible? I this due to inflation or are we really tapping into unused resources?

I didn’t think there were any “unused” resources left in this world. With all the environmental issues, global warming, and rampant foreclosures, I thought that the economy was supposed to slow down or at least stay still. But so far the economy seems to be surging ahead.

You know, too much of a good thing is always bad. I wonder if all this record setting could be the undoing of the financial world.

have you heard about Darfur?

Posted on April 20th, 2007 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

<*******>

I haven’t. Well, at least not until recently. Apparently hundreds of thousands of innocent people are being slaughtered there in a modern day Genocide.

I feel pretty stupid for only hearing about it now, when it has been going on for years. Some how even though I listen to the news everyday, I managed to zone out anything about Darfur. Either that or the media is completely ignoring the atrocities committed in this place so no one really knows about it.

I am surprised and disguised that Iraq is such a big sticking point in politics, yet this catastrophe in Darfur is being ignored. Ignored is perhaps not the correct word for this, but it’s definitely not given enough attention and resources.

I am ashamed that I myself have not heard of this crisis, so I am writing this entry in the hope that anyone who comes here can become aware of this issue as well.

Yesterday I randomly met a Steven Loi from www.playpure.com. Him and his team are UCD Alumni, graphics designers/web programmers from Davis. I was very amazed by some of their work, and I was very impressed that they had their own business. It made me very envious, because I wish me and my friends had started our own business. But anywho, no point in crying over milk that never existed. Instead I am going to fantasize about what life would be like if I had my own business:

1) there would be fresh fruits and healthy snack everywhere so my employees could stay in shape
2) You can come and go any time you want, as long as you get your work done. This means that you may spend your weekends doing work you haven’t finished, but it also means any time you are hung over, you don’t have to drag your ass to work.
3) There will be a meeting every Monday morning and everyone can vent about what they like and don’t like and well try to fix that during the week
4) Work will be done in teams, like in a class, where you get in groups and work on things together.
5) There will absolutely be no cubicles. At most, the couches may be arranged in a square formation to signify your team’s area. :P
6) Everyone will be issued a phone and laptop so that you can take your work with you.
7) Unlike some companies who provide their employees with food, my company will not. The reason is, eventually everyone get sick of lunch buffet type food, so in order to keep your lunch interesting, bring your own or go out.
8) ABSOLUTE NO BUSINESS CASUAL. NO tucking in your shirt. Actually, I will BAN dressing up for work. God, how I hate tucking in my shirts and slacks.
9) Once every three months the whole office will go out together, DURING business hours, and get paid for it. Office parties or outings that requires you to come during your off time is a pile of crap. You should never be required to come hang out with your co-worker unless you get paid.
10) Oh yeah, since you work in teams, your team will be paid bonus if your work generate good revenue for the company.
11) There will be no “worker” in my company. I am not going to hire an illegal or non-english speaker and treat them like they are the company’s mule. If I hire anyone, legal or illegal, english or not, I will treat them like they are one of my most important employees. I find it sickening that so many companies have “worker” employees who are treated like slaves. They have to do all the grunt work, while the white-collar people get to sit around in air conditioned office collecting the big paycheck. Of course people who are less qualified and are doing manual labor, will be paid less, but just because they are paid less, does not mean I will treat them like their are sub-class worker. Everyone will be treated with the same respect, whether they are the janitor, or the Vice President.
12) That brings up my next requirement. Like a household, there will be chores assigned to everyone. Everyone will be required to clean, organized, or maintain a certain aspect of the office. No one is excused from the work.
13) No one will have to ask for a raise. Every six months every employees gets a review. If they can prove that they are more important to the company, they will be considered for a raise.
14) Naps - yes, like in Europe. There will be hammocks and comfortable couches if you want to take a nap.
15) Employees will be encouraged and paid to take classes to extend their knowledge. In fact, any employees who does not want to continue learning wouldn’t be hired. Eventually any employee who wants to branch out and start their own business, will get support from the management and will become business partners.

Anyways, I am done for now. I am not sure what my company will do ( people always ask me this when I tell them I want to start a company ). Maybe we will sell lightbulbs or something, who knows. But the point is, the work place will be fun and inspiring. None of this, your shirt in your pants, come in by 8, cram your lunch down your throat in 30 minutes, don’t leave before 5, and be sure to come to the company’s picnic where you have to pretend to laugh at the bosses corny ass jokes bullshit. :D

Today I sent in a resume to Google. To be honest, I did not want to do it, but if I didn’t my girlfriend would be pissed.

The reason I don’t want to do it is because I feel like applying for Google is like applying to an Ivy League. You have to be a certain way, you have to push certain buttons, the words in your resume have to astronomically combine in some way to form a sequence of code which can be indexed by Google search engine. Ok, not really, but you get the point. Applying for Google makes me feel like I was in high school again and I am trying to get “in” with the cool kids. Shit, I rather start my own company and compete with Google. Too bad I have debt up to my eyeballs. 8)

I watched the commercial Google has about their job. It makes me wonder why I work in a small cubicle and going outside to breathe is a privilege.

Is it because Google has a lot of money so they can be more liberal with their work environment? Or is it because they are so liberal with their work environment that they became rich? It’s almost like asking, what came first, Google or the egg.. I mean job..? Regardless of what the answer is, I doubt it would be easy to convince the old folks who are CEO and President of big corporations to change their minds about work.

Anyways, it was so intimidating, I decided to down two beers before starting my cover letter. I decided if I was going to try for a hole in one, I may as well close my eyes and just shoot.

I wouldn’t be hurt if I don’t get a call back. I bet they get more resumes than the population in some third world countries. Oh yeah, I find the questionnaire that they had kind of lame. Come on now, it’s not hard to figure out what the “correct” answer is. No one in their right mind would volunteer to say that they are quiet, likes to work alone, and hate being in a team. At the team question I almost said I prefer to work alone. Cus in all honestly, I don’t have many good experiences working in a team. Almost anything that I consider a success, I did by myself. Well, except for DEM, that was a team effort. But that was a lot of headache too.

Oh well, whatever, Google pays me a pretty good wage already
