Separation of Church and State was implemented to keep the state out of the church and not the other way around. Not that I disagree on your position on the whole. We as Christians are to love all and we should be known to the world by our love for others. However, homosexuality is a sin. That leaves us in a bit of a dilema does it not? We should hate the sin because in hateing the sin we in turn acknowledge that we hate all sin, including our own personal sin. Christianity gets a bad rap because people like to use Christianity as a means to an end. If they can get get the support of Christians by crying wolf and spreading propaganda in order to accomplish their agenda, then they have the majority of people on their side. For example the crusades. Believe it or not Christianity is by far the worlds largest religion at just under a third of the worlds population. So you see my point.
