How to get free Comcast internet

Update 12/1/2010: Seems like this blog post is still getting some action, so I wanted to share this response I got from Comcast (through my host). I thought it was funny. “Cumcast Customer Security Assurance” wants to silence reddit? and perhaps the internet? LOL.

Update 11/8/2010: Comcast has informed me they are in fact NOT free =). There are some people discussing this surprising revelation here: Becareful, clicking this will cause you to be trapped in an infinite loop.

    they got a monopoly around a lot of parts of my area. seems so that they can badger more money out of you. we’ll call it ‘quantitative easing’.

I disagreed, and they said they didn’t have records, so asked me to bring in the original contract, which said something like “12 mo x 3″ for the 3 services (HBO, DVR, and digital TV, IIRC). So, I brought it in to my local office, waited in line, let them photocopy it, and they agreed that it did indeed say 12 months for everything. Well, they didn’t change the price, and when I called, it was the same story. This time, the person believed me, though (no mention of the proof, though), but said he couldn’t not honor the contract because they no longer offered it. He gave me another deal, and when I broke even with the original contract, I left them for AT&T uVerse.

    Too bad, as I think the cable TV is better, but it costs more, and they don’t stand behind their word, so their promos aren’t worth much.

They said if we go over again they’ll suspend our service for 6 months. since when did comcast put a bandwith limit? wth is this, the 90s where we pay for time on the internet?

    I’m not currently having a problem with comcast, other than their internet keeps crashing or hanging up on me. but there are no other internet providers around my area that are worth the money so I’m stuck. I don’t think it was so much customer service in a whole but the inexperienced bitch you had to deal with. similar thing happened to me with my credit card. I told them I didn’t want something and to take it off, they never did saying I had to wait like a year, then I talked to someone else and they took it off right then. I do agree that this is bullshit “customer care” in practice

With the new Xfinity garb, customer service reps don’t know what’s what anymore, and key accounts wrong all the time. [take a guess how I know this...] It’s more common than not at this point for them to not see proper rate codes on the account for what they are. The whole upsell thing, I agree with you on. I’d be pissed, too. But they aren’t technical support, even when you press 1, 4, 6, 12, A, -5, whatever. It’s the same dipshits answering the phones, we all know it.

    My brother used to work for T-Mobile in London. It was owned by a German company and the head office in Germany was terrible. Every smallest thing had to be approved at board level or something so all their competitors were running rings around them. Another network would come up with some special deal and the T-Mobile guys in London would have a match for it in hours, then they’d have to wait a week or two for approval for Germany before they could roll it out. Meantime they’d lost a whole swathe of customers to whichever network had the special on. By the time they rolled out their deal all their other competitors had it already and one of them would be onto something new. T-Mobile was always playing catch up because of the corporate bureaucracy.

    Comcast is clueless – I only have cable TV and they disconnected it out in the street one day with no notice (bills always paid early, so not a payment issue). When I phoned them, they said it was because of a problem with my cable phone line. I told them I don’t have phone with them and the guy argued with me that I do. I got a supervisor who argued with me the same way. Told him I have had the same TV-only service from them for 15 years, no phone. He still argued with me. I asked to be transferred to whoever can terminate my service. The third guy offered a free month and reconnect if I would stay with them. I said ok, if they reconnected the next day – then he gave me a sales pitch on a TV and phone bundle…

    Comcast is clueless.

    WOW I didn’t realize Triple Play is still outrageously expensive in The States. I mean 120 $. I am in Bulgaria (pls don’t ask me where it is – just Google it) and I have Triple Play and my internet speed is twice as fast as Comcast i used to have in Chicago and I only pay 40 $ for TV w Digital Set Top Box+Blazing Internet+Phone.

So funny that they cant check these things out before cutting us off and claiming we are stealing from them. They seem to accept my payment every month?     I stopped using Comcast because they would do the same things to me, and often “fix” something just for it break a few months later.
    I got AT&T U-Verse about 7-8 months ago. Absolutely no problems with setup, customer service, or use. We actually get more for less money with them.

    If you currently have cable internet service you can also get free basic cable. I’ve gotten it to work on both Charter & Comcast. Get the internet service, split the coaxial cable into two lines. One for the modem, one for the TV. That’s it, enjoy your free cable. Also, if your TV has a QAM tuner it will grab all of the HD channels too.

    you weren’t stealing… you were not trapped properly there fore you were getting channels that you should not have been. That being said you were notified via the newpaper your bill and ahead of time that Comcast was going through digital changes. This would be a lesson in reading your bill and fine print. While most of you are complaining about Comcast and it’s services have any of you read the paper or watched the news? Direct tv and AT&T no longer have a contract to some highly watched channels HGTV for one example. So when you want to watch tv and wonder why you don’t subscribe even though you do.. ( well you thought ) think again. Comcast prices may be higher but there is consistency.. everyone wants something for free or cheap… I think you get what you pay for… so next time you go to Kmart and buy a pair of 20 dollar shoes how long will they last? I am not saying that there haven’t been issues but for my money i like not being charged for every long distance call i make, i like being able to have high speed internet at my fingertips everytime i pick up the computer and i couldn’t live with out my dvr ever. Every company has their flaws at least Comcast is trying to fix it. Rome wasn’t built in a day and the problems didn’t start last night either…..

    Well done, I used to take calls for Comcast Cable TV Technical Support, Billing and General Customer Service. I often gave promotions to people who were long term customers and wanted in on a deal that was only for new customers. The funny thing is they have 20 or so promotions they can apply to your account at any given time. All you have to do is get the right person who knows about them and convince them that you deserve them. Since I was an easy going guy, I handed the promotion packages out like candy. These would be things like Cable TV for $15 for 6 months, Cable TV and 6mb internet for $25 for 6 months, Free HBO for 3months and so on. It’s a shame I quit that job, I made allot of happy customers :D

    the only issue I see with this is: internet is dependant on having a mac address on the account outlet, I know this because I worked in a call center for comcast, seeing that the solution that was used above worked tells me there was already a mac address that belonged to a modem on this individual’s account

The method of activation used was for techs (comcast) thus the reason for logging your mac and your IP# as well as address and all kinds of other info. thats why all the black marker mark outs. If you were getting it free….why then call up and say you weren’t getting it??? Duhhh.. because you weren’t getting it (free or otherwise) The telephone op. treated you like an idiot dumbass because there is no other way to treat an idiot dumbass. I am an employee and I don’t see any reason they would waste 1 second of time worrying about this. I hope lots and lots of you rush out and buy your own modem for which you WILL be charged for internet services the only difference would be that I don’t have to work the service call because we don’t service customer owned modems.     What you can do is always ask for a supervisor. If they are giving you a hard time. Just hung instantly and dial again for another agent or another supervisor.
    You are dealing with a crappy service. It can’t change just like that. Maybe after 5 years IF comcast starts to spend on a better information system.

    1) Information system is error prone.
    They are using two dysfunctional softwares primarily:
    1 for old accounts, other is for newer accounts.
    as others had mentioned, rate or service codes are easily overlooked on any software used, intentional or not.
    1st software has an ms dos gui, slow and error prone.
    Second software is a “generic” one used by other outsourcing companies for other clients as well. Customizing it would be harder. it’s faster one. i mean faster shit.
    So technicians/agents can easily commit errors even if they don’t want to. fucking stupid.

    2) Comcast agents have irrational “performance” metrics to pass,
    aside from addressing your concerns.
    Some agents (especially outsourced) have to end the call in 10 mins or get kicked.
    If you are an outsourced agent accommodating customers “requests” in a call center, you will feel that you are the weakling because you cannot deliver a short average call time. Usually hardened and impolite ones will be left. That’s why there are complaints like their previous call never happened. lol. Some agents INDEED lie to customers just to end sooner – can happen with outsourced or domestic agents. There is a big chance that notes left on the acccount is very few or nothing at all – just to have a faster call.
    They are usually avoiding “unusual” customer requests because it will eat up their time and they might need to ask for supervisor approval. Supervisors are very very harassed too- too much work. So agents are sometimes pissed off by pissed off supervisors. Supervisors even tell agents to lie or make excuses just to avoid supervisor calls.

    3) training is shit.
    also, they easily shift call center agent providers.
    agents are usually not good enough with product knowledge.
    months of training is useless for a dysfunctional system with not technically inclined people.
    They are usually there because of communication skills and passing the metrics.

    stupid customers calls are common too. so youare not the only one pissed off. agents too.
    how would you perform if you spend 9 hours of life inside a call center.

    in general, comcast has a shitty service because they save too much on manpower and information system sanity.
    I freak out even just on my internet ISP system maintenance outage. I understand how you feel :/but the sad thing is comcast is hopeless regarding improvements, and that most people doesnt have options beside from them either.

    IDG News Service – U.S. federal authorities arrested a 26-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly selling modified cable modems that enabled free Internet access, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

    Matthew Delorey of New Bedford, Mass., is charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of wire fraud. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison for each charge, and a $250,000 fine.

    Delorey allegedly ran a now-defunct Web site called Massmodz.com, where hacked modems were sold. The modems had been modified in order to spoof the device’s MAC (Media Access Control) address. It is possible then to either obtain free Internet access or make it appear that a different modem is obtaining access.

    Authorities alleged that Delorey sold two of the modified modems to an undercover FBI agent.

    Delorey also allegedly posted to YouTube showing how to get free Internet access through modified cable modems.

    He allegedly posted instructional videos with titles such as “Massmodz.com How to Get Free Internet Free Cable Internet Comcast or any Cable ISP – 100% works” and “Massmodz.com How to bypass Comcast registration page with premod cable modem SB5100, SB 5101.”

    Federal authorities have recently moved against other people regarding cable modems. In October Ryan Harris, 26, was arrested for allegedly running a San Diego company called TCNISO that sold customizable cable modems and software that could be used to get free Internet service or a speed boost for paying subscribers. Harris is charged with conspiracy, computer intrusion and wire fraud.

    @anon: if you have a shitty ping rate, run a tracert on the same address, it will tell you where you are actually losing connection speed, its very possible the high ping times are due to something ither than your isp being crappy

    I paid comcast 12.95 for lifeline, 20 or so channels, for 10 years, they took off the filter for 6 months, raised the price to 24.95, then took away all but 6 channels, i called them they said i have to rent a dta box, what they do not tell you is that they are scrambling their signals, so only the dta from comcast cable is decoded, that you get 2 per household, extras are $2 per box a moth,,,,,,,,,,,,,so i am disabled vet, is a big house, i got 7 tvs,,,,,,,,,i only use one at a time,,,,,,,now i have to cancel comcast and get digital over the air tv with an amplifier,,,,,,,thats all i watch, anyways,,,,,besides At&t internet

    That’s not terribly bad. I’ve paid $37.95 for 1.5mbit down/256kbit up for two years with ADSL. Cable is the same price, generally faster, no where as reliable.

    ok this is what happend to me …. the guy showed up at my house and first remark he made is about the picture of my gf and her girlfriends he said it waz a “buffet line ” then he didnt have a hammer to complete a job so he left my house to drive to buy one . after about 20 min he came back and and started to drill the holes tru the wall wich he then broke my trim on the side one foot long …. then when he connected the cables the little leftover peaces he just threw on the ground and i found my 10 month old chewing on 2 days after …. so i got at&t after a month but they just needed a modem and bla bla so i ended up back to comcast so i called them and told them we need it on a.s.a.p so i could not wait anymore and i started to mess with the cable modem got to ^^ that screen and did what this guy did and got on line in 3 min even tho the lady told me to wait so someone can turn it on outside!!
    so … i got my internet and its working really good im like so proud i did this myself !!
    week later the same idiot shows up and i get the tv box ready to return he says oh im here to install the new modem i told him he needs to come back some other time but he just walked past me and walked right in my house he said its Ok!!so after him being at my house for almoast 1hour he waz done … i swear if i had a gun in my house that day …i would be in prison right now…fuck you comcast!!

    Does anyone know how the new activation for comcast internet works I tried activating it for a relative of mind but when I entered his account number it took me to activation page that needed a net user id and password. Ended up calling a technician and payed out the ass to have him come out. I thought we were still allowed to do our own activation and save some money but I was wrong. Any info on this would be great thanks.

    I was doing this before two months ago. I have been doing this for about a YEAR! I posted this on the Motorola surfboard hacking site. I asked them how the hack was working(changing my DNS) without even opening my modem, and NO one believed me that it was. So I go on having 30mb internet for free for years on end.

    I don’t condone free internet, but man I can’t believe how rude they were to you, Comcast needs to pull their heads out of their asses and start lowering prices, also listening to their customers…

    Major problem with Xfinity is that it is not only “digital” but it is actually a data transfer from their servers to your box, essentially making it like a set-top box minus the keyboard/mouse. This explains why when certain time periods that the whole thing pixelates or slows down… Then you have a short delay and the video displays again. What you have is lack of data on a streaming data feed.

    Essentially a DTA = a fancy ATA, except instead of sending phone over IP, they are sending video over IP.

     And go whrere ? Comcast, Time Warner and the other Giants have a MONOPOLY ! They have fought to keep competition out business but any means, buying off local politicians, not allowing permits, etc. All of them charge way too much. You can either go with you local cable company or Direct TV or Dish and all three are WAY over priced and have terrible service records !  I the past 20 years at least 5 different companies here (in the Dayton OH area) have announced thier new cable service and all have been blocked !

    Cable, satelitte all charges for service that is mostly repeats 90% of time and almost 100% during the summer ! On top of that they have MUCH less new programming than FREE TV and many more commercials. So you get less programming and MORE commercials AND you have to pay $60 or more per month on top of it !!!! Now most shows FREE and cable are going to 40 minutes of show and 20 minutes of commercials per hour,  1/3 rd commercials !!! Why should we pay for that ? That is the REAL reason that they don’t want people downloading shows and the real reason they do. I’m sick of commercials !!! If they would make it 9 minutes (sbout half) of what it used to be it wouldnt be as bad. On top of it they are adding commercials AS THE SCRIPT OF THE SHOW ! Almost every Bones episode has car commercials in it and many are a large part of the script. Smallville had an entire episode written around how the BRAND NAME chewing gum factory had been shut down because the flavor lasts so long.

    We need real competition with real shows not constant ads they we pay for on top of it !
    Cable and satelitte should be FREE except for the commercial free channels and those should be only $2-3 per month since they also have ads so called “previews” and “making of shows”. This is way out of control and way way over priced.

On demand is not available in my area, neither is the VOICE and we only get 5 yes I said 5 HD channels, but have to pay the same price. I do like their internet but its expensive as hell. Comcast sucks shit. They dont even tell you that on demand is not available until after they instal it and then the promotion I signed up for was not able to be found. They said they never had that promotion even though I showed them the paper, they flat said it never existed so I had to pay full price. There is no value at all with comcast in my area.

    They did the same thing to me. I had about 6-8 free channels. I never had Comcast service EVER. All of a sudden, I turn on the TV and every station had a huge message. The message says, “If you can see this message, the TV you’re watching
    isn’t yet ready for Comcast’s digital network enhancements. To order the
    necessary equipment, call 1-877-634-4434 or go to http://www.Comcast.com/digitalnow to avoid service interruptions. Once you have digital equipment connected to your TV you will no longer see this message.” I called to ask them what happened to my 6-8 free analog stations. They said that we had been getting extra channels all along for

    I agree they are the worst cable company that I have ever seen.  I have been without service since yesterday before noon. The service reps never seem to know whats going on.  4 numbers to call since there is no local number. I hate this company.
